Believe it or not, the heart pumps around 2,000 gallons of blood each day, which is quite the accomplishment for something the size of a fist. Keeping our body hydrated not only helps our heart that day, but an easier workload over time results in a much healthier heart as we enter old age.
Effects of Dehydration
While staying hydrated is a must for an easier workflow for our hearts, the consequences of becoming dehydrated are just as motivational. Our body is able to measure the blood volume circulating throughout its system, and stretch or tighten the vessel walls accordingly. When our body runs low on water, these walls are told to tighten, which makes the heart work harder to keep the blood volume at the required level.
Another safety measure that occurs when blood volume runs low is an increase in sodium in the blood. This increase causes high blood pressure, which causes capillaries in the body to close. As more capillaries close, the pressure rises even more, creating a more thick and concentrated blood flow. A lack of water also decreases our cardiac output, which is how well our heart delivers blood to the rest of the body. Due to the above factors, our heart is drastically less efficient while still working harder!
Dehydration can also create orthostatic hypotension. This occurs when a sudden shift from lying down to standing or sitting creates a large drop in our blood pressure. Not having enough water increases the odds of this happening because the body doesn’t have enough blood volume to adjust the heart rate like it normally would.
