Right off the bat, after reading this title, you’re probably shaking your head at the idea that drinking water could reduce anxiety and stress levels. However, drinking enough water plays such an important role in how our body and mind function; being dehydrated can lead to higher levels of stress and anxiety, not to mention fatigue and irritability.
It’s hard to believe that something as simple as drinking enough water can help limit, and even manage, anxiety––but it can. Here’s how.
Dehydration Can Lead to Higher Levels of Stress
Our bodies are composed of a lot of moving parts; nearly every function of our body is monitored by the efficient flow of water moving through our system. Water transports hormones, chemical messages, and nutrients to vital organs inside of our body––sending important signals to and fro. When we don’t stay properly hydrated, our body will send out signals that look oddly reminiscent to symptoms of anxiety: dizziness, headache, muscle fatigue, feeling faint, and an increased heart rate.
According to a study done at Tufts University, there appears to be a direct link to hydration and your mood. Scientists found that student-athletes who were just mildly dehydrated reported feelings of anger, confusion, tension, and fatigue. Another study published in 2012 found that dehydration can influence mood, energy levels, and the ability to think clearly.
While staying hydrated is not the “cure” for anxiety, it is a great place to start if you want to reduce its intensity, and live a life with less stress.
How to Stay Hydrated to Prevent Stress
Proper hydration is not a cure-all for mental illnesses, and while we’d love to have a quick fix for anxiety and depression, these unfortunately don’t exist. However, staying properly hydrated is a great way to stave off any unwanted side effects of dehydration like nausea, dizziness, and rapid heart rate.
The good news? Dehydration is completely preventable, and if you drink enough water during the day, you can keep the unwanted side effects of dehydration at bay.
So, how can you stay hydrated to ensure your day goes by as stress-free as possible? At a minimum, make sure to drink plenty of water during the day. We recommend getting into the habit of drinking at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day.
By maintaining proper hydration, you can be confident that you won’t feel as groggy during the work day, or ready to crash after your cup of coffee wears off. While doing this for a few weeks, try to keep track of any symptoms you notice, as this can help you figure out if water actually does help lower your stress levels.
