Stay Hydrated While Working From Home

For months now, employees across the country have been hunkering down in the comfort of their homes in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). It’s safe to say that if you’re juggling mountains of work, you’ve probably unintentionally neglected self-care during this time of isolation. When our schedules are drastically disrupted, it can be much harder to maintain healthy habits such as hydration and regular movement.

Here are a few tips to help you stay hydrated while working from home.

Set Hydration Goals

One of the easiest ways to stay on top of your hydration is to set benchmarks for hydration, such as drinking a certain amount of water before breakfast, again before lunch, and again before dinner. Setting attainable goals is a great way to meet your water intake goals for the day. A plus? You’ll be less likely to binge eat, or mistake thirst cues for hunger cues.

Set Alarms on Your Phone

Setting a phone alarm for drinking water is actually a great technique to stay hydrated. It’s easy to forget to stay hydrated, especially if you’re in meetings all day, or have a million other important things on your plate. By setting an alarm, you are automating a regular reminder to yourself to stay on top of your goals. After you depend on an alarm for a few days, it’ll start to feel like second nature.

Wipe Down a Surface, Take a Sip

If you’re someone who is motivated by cleaning, you may benefit from making a game out of hydration. Every time you wipe down a surface in your home, drink a glass of water. It’s a great way to do something for your environment and for your body at the same time.

Swap One Sugary Beverage a Day

If one of the biggest things keeping you from staying hydrated is unhealthy habits––start small! Instead of getting rid of every soft drink or fruit juice in your home, swap out one a day with a glass of water. If flavor is what keeps you from staying hydrated––add a fruit slice to your next glass of water.

Set Up Water Delivery

Staying hydrated while working from home doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, with Water Way, it’s easier than you think! If you’re interested in our water delivery services, or filtration systems, please contact us.

Boost Your Immunity to Viruses by Staying Hydrated

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all a little more concerned about staying healthy than we were before. While the myth that drinking water every 15 minutes would prevent the coronavirus infection certainly isn’t true, there is truth in the idea that staying hydrated can boost immunity and help you stay well when viruses are running rampant, COVID-19 or otherwise.

Hydration and Your Health

The human body is composed of about 70% water, which is pretty incredible when you think about it. With all that water in our bodies, it’s no surprise that hydration is important on many levels—including the health of our immune system.

Aside from practicing good personal hygiene, like washing your hands (birthday song twice, please), covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, and following a healthy diet, staying hydrated plays a huge role in keeping your immune system strong and helping you stay well.

Why Hydration Helps with Immunity

Drinking water oxygenates your cells, which allows them to work at full capacity and protect you from viruses more effectively. Hydration also helps your body regulate its temperature, so it’s even more essential to drink plenty of water if you start to come down with a fever.

Finally, hydration helps the body distribute nutrients to all of its parts, and it keeps your tissues and body functions working properly—which naturally helps you fight off infections more effectively. Taking certain medications when sick can dry you out, and you can also lose water in the form of mucus. Drinking plenty of water helps your body remove more germs through mucus loss without risking dehydration.

Stay Healthier with Home Water Delivery

When it comes to your health, you want to do everything you can to stay well. Water Way can deliver fresh, clean water right to your doorstep so that you stay hydrated year round and fight off all those viruses that try to make you sick. While we’re at it, we can deliver coffee and sports drinks, too—find out more today about our delivery services, and don’t forget to drink your water!

How Water Way Serves Clients During COVID-19

To say we live in weird times would be an understatement. People are panic buying everything under the sun––bulk water cases, cleaning supplies, and towers of toilet paper.

Put simply, COVID-19 has interrupted our everyday routines on the most basic levels––from social distancing, to the items we buy at grocery stores––and will continue to do so. Despite the crazy, changing times, our delivery is still the same––with a few sanitary protocols put into place. Keep reading for more information.

We’re An Essential Business

Under COVID-19 guidelines, Water Way has been classified as an essential service provider. What does this mean? We are continuing to deliver water and other products to our customers. Aside from a few important sanitation adjustments, we are operating our business just as we normally do. To ensure the safety of our customers, we are strictly adhering to “social distancing” guidelines, following our normal procedures regarding quality control, and providing safe drinking products and sanitized equipment.

What You Can Do

Currently, Water Way has had no instances of employees with COVID-19 symptoms and we are working extra hard to keep it that way. When possible, we are asking that our customers leave their empty bottles outside on their route day. Out of an abundance of caution, we advise that you wipe down the neck of the bottle and handle prior to putting it on the cooler. For extra safety measures, we ask that all of our customers not refill already used containers from the water cooler spigots to avoid contamination.

We can assure you that our bottles are rigorously sanitized prior to delivery, and our water is always safe to drink.

We’re Here to Help

If, for any reason, you need a prompt water delivery, make sure to contact us to let us know about increased water needs. If you have any questions about your water delivery service during the COVID-19 pandemic, please don’t hesitate to reach out and contact our office. As our customer, you are of the utmost priority, and we want to make sure your needs are met during a time of emergency. We will continue to serve you the best quality water, and we only ask that you adhere to our safety policy.

Can Staying Hydrated Reduce Anxiety?

Right off the bat, after reading this title, you’re probably shaking your head at the idea that drinking water could reduce anxiety and stress levels. However, drinking enough water plays such an important role in how our body and mind function; being dehydrated can lead to higher levels of stress and anxiety, not to mention fatigue and irritability.

It’s hard to believe that something as simple as drinking enough water can help limit, and even manage, anxiety––but it can. Here’s how.

Dehydration Can Lead to Higher Levels of Stress

Our bodies are composed of a lot of moving parts; nearly every function of our body is monitored by the efficient flow of water moving through our system. Water transports hormones, chemical messages, and nutrients to vital organs inside of our body––sending important signals to and fro. When we don’t stay properly hydrated, our body will send out signals that look oddly reminiscent to symptoms of anxiety: dizziness, headache, muscle fatigue, feeling faint, and an increased heart rate.

According to a study done at Tufts University, there appears to be a direct link to hydration and your mood. Scientists found that student-athletes who were just mildly dehydrated reported feelings of anger, confusion, tension, and fatigue. Another study published in 2012 found that dehydration can influence mood, energy levels, and the ability to think clearly.

While staying hydrated is not the “cure” for anxiety, it is a great place to start if you want to reduce its intensity, and live a life with less stress.

How to Stay Hydrated to Prevent Stress

Proper hydration is not a cure-all for mental illnesses, and while we’d love to have a quick fix for anxiety and depression, these unfortunately don’t exist. However, staying properly hydrated is a great way to stave off any unwanted side effects of dehydration like nausea, dizziness, and rapid heart rate.

The good news? Dehydration is completely preventable, and if you drink enough water during the day, you can keep the unwanted side effects of dehydration at bay.

So, how can you stay hydrated to ensure your day goes by as stress-free as possible? At a minimum, make sure to drink plenty of water during the day. We recommend getting into the habit of drinking at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day.

By maintaining proper hydration, you can be confident that you won’t feel as groggy during the work day, or ready to crash after your cup of coffee wears off. While doing this for a few weeks, try to keep track of any symptoms you notice, as this can help you figure out if water actually does help lower your stress levels.

Again, we aren’t claiming that hydration solves every problem, but it can help you get to the root of some issues you may be experiencing. Proper hydration is essential to living a healthy life, and crucial for keeping your system in the best shape possible.

Hydrating Properly for Spring Sports

Hydration is important year-round, but especially during spring sports season when temperatures spike and extra fluids are lost during exercise. If your fluid loss is not replenished, this could lead to sports-related injuries and potentially life-threatening, heat-related injuries such as a heat stroke. The best way to stay properly hydrated is to pre-hydrate before you start any physical activity. Keep reading for proper hydration guidelines for spring sports.

Hydrate Before You Exercise

It’s no secret that hydration during physical activity is extremely important to staying healthy and avoiding dehydration-related issues. Just as important as hydrating during a physical activity, is hydrating before you even begin physical activity. Here are a few pre-hydration strategies we recommend:

  • Consume 500-600 ml of water or a sports drink at least two to three hours prior to physical activity.
  • Consume 200-300 ml of water or a sports drink at least 10 to 20 minutes prior to physical activity.
  • You should begin all physical activities properly hydrated to ensure no dehydration occurs during, or after, physical activity.

Proper Spring Sports Hydration Strategies

In order to maintain proper hydration levels, individuals should consume 200-300 ml of water every 10 to 20 minutes during physical activity. Individuals who are participating in activities with frequent breaks, such as football, softball, baseball, and track and field, should consume small volumes of liquid at regular intervals. For athletes who are participating in activities where breaks only occur during time-outs or between quarters––like running, field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse––they should ingest enough fluids to maximize their hydration levels. Remember, if you feel thirsty it means your body has been needing hydration for some time. Don’t wait until your mouth is dry to drink water, especially when playing sports.

It’s important to note that you should be paying attention to your perspiration to decide how much fluid intake is necessary to compensate for the amount of fluid lost.

Post-Exercise Hydration Strategies

The primary goal of rehydrating after physical activity is to immediately return the body back to physiologic function. You should drink hydrating fluids within two hours after physical activity. These fluids consist of water, carbohydrates, and electrolytes to restore your body’s hydration status, and glycogen stores to speed up the rehydration process.

Make sure the fluids you drink are free of fructose, caffeine, and carbonation. We recommend you consume fluids with a temperature of 10 to 15 degrees for optimal rehydration.

Signs of Dehydration

If lost fluids are not replaced within the recommended time frame, you risk dehydration which can lead to other issues ranging from mild to life-threatening, including:

  • Thirst
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Cramps
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Decreased performance

Heat Illnesses and How to Treat Them

An individual who is dehydrated, conscious, and cognizant can be treated with aggressive oral hydration to prevent the occurrence of a heat illness.

If an individual or an athlete is not properly hydrated before or after physical activity, it can lead to one of the three following heat illnesses:

Cramps––Signs of heat cramps include muscle twitching and cramps in arms, legs, and abdomen. Heat cramps can be treated by increased fluid intake, stretching, and resting in a cool place.

Exhaustion––Heat exhaustion is the result of moderate heat fatigue. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include sweating, increased thirst, weakness, dizziness, headache, and skin that is gray, ashy, cold, or clammy. Treatment for heat exhaustion includes an increase in fluid and electrolytes, and resting in a cool place.

Stroke––A heat stroke is a severe heat illness and a medical emergency. Signs and symptoms of a heat stroke include skin that is hot and dry, irritability, disorientation, glassy eyes, rapid pulse, and low blood pressure. Emergency treatment for a heat stroke is life or death. Treatment should involve decreasing body temperature by ice or ice towels and transportation to an Emergency Room.

Athletic performance is always at its best when adequate hydration is maintained. To stay hydrated during spring sports, it’s important that you hydrate before and after any physical activity––so that you can go longer and harder.
At Water Way, we deliver pure, refreshing water, as well as sports drinks for optimal hydration. Do you need to make a bulk order? No problem! Contact us today and we’ll help you schedule a delivery.

Infused Water for the Winter Months

The winter months can bring on an array of health issues: dry skin, asthma, seasonal depression, and yes, dehydration. In this blog we’re talking about a fun way to stay hydrated: fruit-infused water
